Greeting Cards
The Greeting Card is not just an British tradition but a
multicultural way to express encouragement for special
occasions such as holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc.
Greeting cards can be traced to ancient civilizations like
the Chinese (who typically sent cards for the New Year) and
(Egyptians who used papyrus to exchange their sentiments).
Getting a greeting card is recognition of a landmark
achieved by that special person (or people) in your life.
Receiving a greeting card is a boost of encouragement to
help commemorate achieving that goal. Today there are many
types of greeting cards for each category: handmade,
electronic, musical, photographic, humorous, inspirational,
Christian, eCards, folded, not folded, single page, multiple
pages and so forth.
Every year my grandmother would send each of her children
and grandchildren a birthday card. That tended to be quite a
production because she had eight kids and over twenty
grandkids! It was always exciting to go to the mailbox and
receive something special just for me--with a little bit of
'pin' money. She never failed to send a card. And when I had
kids, she started sending them cards for their birthday too.
This multibillion dollar industry is based on the concept of
creating a visual message for specific occasions in life.
The standard card is a rectangular, single-fold with a
design on the front and a poem or 'greeting' on the
interior. The card comes with a matching envelope. That is
the most basic design. Greeting cards can be as elaborate or
as simple as the designer imagines.
The current trend in the greeting card industry is the eCard
and the musical card. The eCard is a platform online that
allows the sender to choose from a set of designs,
animations, sayings, and music to email to their loved one.
A musical card is the same as the standard card mentioned
above except when you open the card to read the greeting a
song will play (or a bird will chirp, a phrase will be
repeated, etc.) These types of verbal cards also include the
option of recording your own message to send.
Resurgence of hand made cards is part of the current trend
in greeting cards. Companies have stepped up the production
of all the products needed to create elaborately designed
cards such as stamps, specialized papers, inks, paints,
stickers, accessories, etc.
Holiday cards are sent for Christmas, Easter, and
Valentine's Day. In the fourteenth century, Europeans were
creating handmade Valentine's to send to their loved ones.
The oldest created Valentine is on exhibit at the British
Museum. The first English Valentine in 1477 is part of the
Paston letters and is from Margary Brews to her fiancé, John
Paston.
In Germany, designers used woodblocks and the printing
process to create greeting cards. In Boston during the 19th
century, Louis Prang (a German immigrant) is typically
credited for bringing the greeting card industry to America
after he opened a small lithographic print shop that
distributed greeting cards.
One of the largest companies in the greeting card industry
today is the Hallmark Company. Smaller companies have risen
up to compete with this Goliath and the online industry has
also eroded the market share of the traditional greeting
card companies. There is a stiff competitive edge to the
greeting card industry which simply means a variety of
products and continually innovative designs that capitalize
on current trends.
Sometimes the eCard may be the best bet and other times
creating a handmade, one-of-a-kind design is called for. No
matter the special occasion or landmarks achieved, there is
a greeting card available to celebrate it.
